‘Becoming Friends’ readings of 14 January 2013

[T]he universe of the creation-word,
the divine command to Be, that universe
of qualities is beyond any pointing to […]

No being is unconnected
to that reality, and that connection
cannot be said. There, there’s
no separation and no return.

There are guides who can show you the way.
Use them. But they will not satisfy your longing.

Keep wanting that connection
with all your pulsing energy.

The throbbing vein
will take you further
than any thinking.

Muhammad said, “Don’t theorize
about essence!” All speculations
are just more layers of covering.

Human beings love coverings!
They think the designs on the curtains
are what’s being concealed.

Observe the wonders as they occur around you.
Don’t claim them. Feel the artistry
moving through, and be silent.

Or say, “I cannot praise You
as You should be praised.
Such words are infinitely
beyond my understanding.”

From: The Essential Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks with John Moyne (Penguin Books, London, 1995),
Body Intelligence, pp. 152-153

In The Book of Mirdad by Mikhail Naimy, Mirdad answers one monk’s request to be shown the way to freedom from care and suffering:

“This is the way to freedom from care and pain.
So think as if every thought were to be etched in fire upon the sky for all and everything to see. For so, in truth, it is.
So speak as if the world entire were but a single ear intent on hearing what you say. And so, in truth, it is.
So do as if your every deed were to recoil upon your heads. And so in truth it does.
So wish as if you were the wish. And so in truth, you are.
So live as if your God himself had need of you His Life to live. And so, in truth, He does.”

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are  lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Philippians 4.8

No, the Lord has told us what is good. What he requires of us is this: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God.

Micah 6.9

Love is patient and kind; it is not jealous or conceited or proud; love is not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable; love does not keep a record of wrongs; love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth. Love never gives up; and its faith, hope and patience never fail.

1 Corinthians 13.4-7

Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God,  the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.
He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40.28-31

A 9th century Hindu scripture, The Mahapurana by Jinasena :

‘’ Some foolish men declare that a Creator made the world. The doctrine that the world was created is ill-advised, and should be rejected. If God created the world, where was he before creation ? …How could God have made the world, you are faced with an endless regression…know that the world is uncreated, as time itself is, without beginning and end. And it is based on principles.’’
